Какво представлява проучването за вода?

Два електрода се забиват в земята на фиксирано разстояние, свързани с електрически проводник, преминаващ от всеки електрод към инструмента. Скенерът отчита разликата в напрежението между двата електрода и съхранява стойността в паметта си. При електро-геофизичните методи в повечето случаи са използваните електроди. При извършване на изследване на собствения потенциал се препоръчват неполяризиращи се електроди. Причината е, че при контакт на металните електроди с влага в земята се създава слабо напрежение, което смущава измерванията. Използването на неполяризиращи се електроди при извършване на SP измерванията е начинът да се избегнат подобни смущения.

След първоначалното отчитане, електродите се преместват на разстояние напред и се прави ново измерване. Серията от показания на напрежението показва дали геоложкия разрез е хомогенен или има открита аномалия на SP. Открита аномалия се наблюдава когато волтметърът регистрира голям спад в напрежението.. При търсенето на вода в геоложката среда, аномалиите обикновено са от порядъка на няколко миливолта. Когато се измерва рудно тяло, може да се получат отрицателни напрежения от няколкостотин миливолта и до волт - за голяма аномалия.

Причината за отрицателното въздействие на сулфидните рудни тела е сложна и не е напълно изяснена. Въпреки това, отрицателното отчитане на аномалия вероятно е причинено от окисление в горната част на рудното тяло, което се създава от богата на кислород дъждовна вода, просмукваща се надолу. Това причинява разлика в полярността в горната и долната част на рудното тяло и създава това, което по същество е огромна, но слаба батерия в земята.

Сканирането за вода се извършва по метод на градиента, с два електрода: единият в началната точка (точка нула), а другият на разстояние 10 метра. След отчитането се премества всеки електрод на стъпки.
